Personal Development

Summarises seven strategies we can all use to improve our happiness levels, and therefore overall performance. Shawn is a Harvard Lecturer and works with Fortune 500 companies on how to apply positive psychology in the workplace.

A fantastic overview of many of the concepts covered in STEER. Susan is a great author and makes personal development reading fun.

This book relates personal choice to the concept of compound interest. Jeff talks about how we are never simply plateauing in life, rather we are either making small choices towards, or away from success.

The teachings are incredibly powerful. Eckhart focuses on how we let go of our past, stop trying to control our future, and rather be present in the moment. Two more Eckhart books worth reading are: Stillness Speaks and A New Earth.

Only 10% of the variance in our happiness is influenced by our life circumstances. 40% of our capacity for happiness is within our power to change, and this books unpacks 12 evidence based strategies to do just this.

Steve talks about 7 areas of life that are worthwhile creating positive habits within, so as to reach our potential. For those who have completed ACP programs – we discuss about “sharpening the saw” as well as Locus of Control. These are two of the habits discussed in this book.

If you loved all the neuroscience in our programs, then this book unpacks much of these concepts in relation to why we do what we do and how to effectively take control of how your brain works.

An insight into the research behind gender bias and a solid wakeup call that bias exists in all of us, even when you yourself are the minority. Some wonderful tips from the COO of Facebook as to how women can take charge and get ahead in their careers, while also being a mum.

A good book to help with communication and negotiation skills.

We all have preferences for how we show love to others. This book is a fantastic insight into 5 main ways we communicate love and how sometimes we feel like we put in all this effort without it being acknowledged. There is also a free online quiz which can quickly tell you your love language.

Leadership

A really interesting, applicable and simple read about practical strategies leaders can employ to optimise on culture and performance. It also has great statistics and research around how ‘all this fluffy stuff’ impacts on our psychological and biological wellbeing.

Written by the authors of the MSCEIT, this book explores the 4 abilities of EI and gives practical examples of them in the workplace. It also includes a series of questionnaires to assess your EI approach if you haven’t completed a full MSCEIT.

The old adage is ingrained in us that if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. While this advice may work for home life,  it may not work in the workplace. Kim Scott has led successful teams at Google and Apple and this book draws directly on her experiences.

Financial Freedom

Written for the every day Aussie. You’ll get a step-by-step formula: open this account, then do this; call this person, and say this, invest money here, and not there. It’s a great read for anyone drowning in debt and needing a place to get started. Less helpful for more established money managers/investors.

This book explores the mindset required in setting up solid investments and/or starting a business.

A challenging read, but quite amazing that what we know about finances in the 21st century stemmed from advice that was given back in the 1920s and earlier.

How attitudes and mindsets influences our financial situations.

Parenting

The neuroscience of parenting. A walk through of your childs developing brain from birth to 12 years. How we can best parent, communicate and love our child based on their developmental stage.

Based on the concept of the “circle of security” this book covers how to protect and nurture babies through teens while fostering their independence, and what emotional needs a child may be expressing with difficult behaviour.

A great read for new mums trying to navigate all the conflicting rules of keeping a baby alive. Pamela strips it back, goes back to basics and shares the neuroscience as to why it works. If you are a male primary care giver, there is still many applicable lessons for you.
